| Literacy Across the Curriculum
is a custom online professional development series of five modules
designed to assist teachers working with struggling readers in all content
areas. The featured teachers in each of the five Literacy Across the
Curriculum modules are Clark County middle school teachers. Literacy
Across the Curriculum is built on a multi-layered interface that
includes a visually stimulating and interactive combination of video
demonstrations and discussions, Internet resource links, Web content and
teacher handouts.
Module 1: Welcome to LATC/
Accessing Prior Knowledge
By accessing prior knowledge, teachers can stimulate student thinking so
that reading becomes more meaningful. In this module, teachers will
explore the rationale for accessing prior knowledge as well as various
strategies to use in their own classrooms.
Module 2: Text Structure and
Analysis
A science textbook, a newspaper article, and instructions on how to use a
computer program all have a unique text structure. Research shows that
strong readers learn to use the features and structure of the text itself
to increase their comprehension. In this module, teachers will explore
strategies for decoding the structure of a text. They also will observe a
teacher helping students make sense of a page in a science textbook.
Module 3: Vocabulary
Building
Every subject area has vocabulary that is unique to its discipline. If
students do not possess a subject's vocabulary, they will have difficulty
in demonstrating an understanding of that subject. As such, vocabulary in
content areas must be explicitly taught and modeled. In this module,
teachers will explore strategies on how to build vocabulary skills in
their classroom. They also will observe a content area teacher modeling a
vocabulary lesson.
Module 4: Sequencing
Sequencing is necessary for children to grasp everything from simple
instructions to complex text. Literacy requires the understanding that
there is an order to both the text and the process of reading itself. In
this module, teachers will explore how to develop sequencing skills in
their classrooms. They also will observe a content area teacher modeling a
sequencing lesson.
Module 5: Setting the Stage
for Learning
Setting the stage for learning involves creating an environment that is
emotionally and physically safe for all students. Students are more likely
to take academic risks, ask questions and seek assistance when they are
comfortable in their classrooms. In this module, teachers will explore how
to help set the stage for learning. They also will see a teacher modeling
a lesson that helps students develop interpersonal skills.
